Description
Clematis ‘Voluceau’ is a beautiful deciduous climbing vine admired for its large, rich reddish-purple flowers and late-season flowering display. Its vibrant blooms create a striking contrast against fresh green foliage, making it an excellent choice for adding colour and vertical interest to the garden.
As a late-flowering Clematis, ‘Voluceau’ provides a welcome display of colour during the warmer months, when many spring-flowering climbers have finished blooming.
Its climbing habit makes it particularly well suited to trellises, archways, fences and other garden supports. The richly coloured flowers also complement lighter flowering plants, particularly white, soft pink and lavender varieties.
‘Voluceau’ works beautifully in cottage-style gardens, mixed borders and alongside other climbing plants. Its ability to flower on new growth also makes annual pruning relatively straightforward.
As a deciduous climber, ‘Voluceau’ loses its foliage during winter before producing fresh growth and flowers as the weather warms.
Mature size: A climbing vine, with mature height and spread depending on growing conditions and available support.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade, ideally in a position receiving morning sunlight with protection from harsh afternoon sun. In Melbourne gardens, some afternoon shade can help protect the flowers during hot summer weather.
Clematis ‘Voluceau’ prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Keep the roots cool by applying mulch around the base or planting low-growing companion plants nearby.
Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture throughout the warmer months, particularly while the plant is actively growing and flowering.
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
Pruning Group 3: Clematis ‘Voluceau’ flowers on the current season's new growth and benefits from hard pruning during winter, preferably in late winter before new spring growth begins.
Cut stems back to approximately 20–40cm above ground level, just above a pair of strong, healthy buds. This encourages vigorous new growth, helps maintain a manageable plant and supports flowering on fresh stems.
As a Group 3 Clematis, ‘Voluceau’ can be pruned hard each year without sacrificing its main flowering display.
Provide a trellis, climbing frame or other suitable support for the stems to climb. Clematis climbs by wrapping its leaf stalks around slender supports, so fine trellis or garden wire is particularly useful.
