Cupressus sempervirens ‘Glauca’, commonly known as Blue Pencil Pine, is a tall narrow evergreen conifer valued for its dense upright growth and refined blue-green foliage. Widely regarded as one of the best Pencil Pine varieties available, it forms a naturally compact column without becoming overly broad, making it ideal for formal gardens, narrow spaces and architectural planting.

The dense foliage holds a deep green to blue-green tone throughout the year, creating strong vertical structure in the landscape. Unlike many other Pencil Pines, ‘Glauca’ produces very few large cones, helping maintain its neat form without branches becoming weighed down over time. Its slim profile and consistent shape make it especially effective for lining driveways, framing entrances and creating symmetrical garden designs.

This hardy evergreen is highly versatile and works equally well as a standalone feature, in formal rows or planted in large containers. It is commonly used along fences, beside pathways and in Mediterranean or contemporary garden designs where year-round structure is important. The naturally narrow habit allows substantial height without taking up excessive width, making it practical for suburban gardens and tighter planting spaces.

Mature size: approximately 5 metres high × 50 centimetres wide in 10 years
Ultimate mature size may reach approximately 15 metres high × 1 metre wide over time

Care & Growing Tips
Plant Cupressus sempervirens ‘Glauca’ in a full sun position for best density and foliage colour, though it can tolerate light semi-shade.

Prefers moist, well-drained soil but adapts well to a range of soil conditions once established. Mulching around the base will help retain soil moisture and regulate root temperature.

Water regularly during establishment and during extended dry periods, especially in hotter weather.

Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring if needed to encourage healthy growth.

Very little maintenance is required. Light pruning can be carried out to maintain a tighter form or encourage denser growth if desired.

Highly frost tolerant and suitable for a wide range of Australian climates once established.

Ideal for
– Formal hedging and screening
– Driveway and pathway planting
– Narrow garden spaces
– Mediterranean and contemporary gardens
– Large pots and container planting
– Vertical architectural feature planting
