Description
Dichondra repens, commonly known as Kidney Weed, is a low-growing Australian native groundcover that forms a soft, dense carpet of rounded, kidney-shaped green leaves. Its spreading habit makes it an attractive alternative to traditional lawn in areas where a natural, low-maintenance groundcover is preferred.
Small white flowers appear amongst the foliage during spring and summer, adding subtle seasonal interest. Its lush green leaves provide year-round coverage, helping to soften garden edges and create a natural transition between paved areas, stepping stones and garden beds.
Particularly useful in partly shaded areas, Dichondra repens can tolerate light foot traffic, making it suitable for informal pathways and lawn alternatives. It also grows well in pots and hanging baskets, where its spreading stems can gently trail over the edges.
Mature size: approximately 10cm high × 1.2 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil. Dichondra repens performs particularly well in partly shaded areas but can tolerate full sun when provided with adequate moisture.
Water regularly while establishing to encourage a dense, spreading habit. Once established, it has moderate drought tolerance but will benefit from supplementary watering during extended hot, dry periods. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Dichondra repens has relatively low nutrient requirements. If growth becomes slow or foliage lacks vigour, apply a diluted liquid fertiliser in early spring or summer.
When grown as a lawn alternative, it can be lightly mown three to four times a year to maintain an even, compact appearance. Alternatively, allow it to spread naturally for a softer groundcover effect.
This hardy native tolerates light frost, although growth may slow during Melbourne's cooler winter months.
