Description

Doryanthes excelsa, commonly known as the Gymea Lily, is one of Australia’s most spectacular native plants, prized for its bold foliage and towering flower spikes. This striking species forms a large clump of long, sword-like leaves, creating a strong architectural presence in the garden year-round.
In spring to early summer, mature plants produce an extraordinary flowering stem rising 2–4 metres high, topped with a dense cluster of large, deep red, trumpet-shaped flowers. This dramatic display attracts birds and pollinators and creates a true focal point in any landscape.
Naturally found along the central coast of New South Wales, the Gymea Lily is well suited to larger gardens, rockeries and feature planting, where it has space to develop and be appreciated.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade in deep, well-drained soil. This species develops a strong underground base, so deeper soils will support better long-term growth and flowering.
Water regularly, particularly during dry periods, as consistent moisture will encourage healthier growth. Apply a slow-release fertiliser or organic feed in spring to support development.
Choose the planting position carefully. Ideally where the impressive flower spike can be viewed at height, such as below a slope, retaining wall or elevated area.
Ideal for
– Feature planting in large gardens
– Architectural and structural planting
– Rockeries and sloped landscapes
– Native and wildlife-friendly gardens
– Creating dramatic seasonal impact
