Description

Dwarf Apricot ‘Tilton’ is a productive, easy-care fruit tree that produces full-sized, sweet apricots on a compact tree ideal for smaller gardens. Selected specifically for home orchards, this dwarf variety delivers generous crops of large, flavoursome fruit while remaining easy to manage and harvest. It is an excellent choice for Melbourne backyards, courtyards and large pots where space is limited.
In spring, the tree is covered in delicate white blossom before developing large, slightly oval apricots that ripen in early February. The fruit features smooth orange skin with firm, bright orange flesh and a deliciously sweet, juicy flavour. Perfect for eating fresh from the tree, the fruit is also excellent for stewing, jams, preserving, baking and drying. 'Tilton' is a prolific bearer, producing reliable harvests year after year.
Its naturally compact habit makes this variety ideal for home gardens without compromising on fruit size or quality. Like all dwarf fruit trees, Dwarf Tilton produces full-sized fruit on a smaller tree. Due to the heavy crops it can carry, permanent staking is recommended to provide ongoing support.
Mature size: approximately 2.5 metres high × 2.5 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun position with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day for the best flowering and fruit production. In Melbourne's hotter summers, protection from harsh late afternoon sun and hot northerly winds can help reduce fruit scorch.
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Many Melbourne gardens have heavy clay soils, so improving drainage with compost or planting into a raised garden bed or mound will encourage healthier growth. Also performs exceptionally well in large pots using a premium-quality potting mix.
Water deeply and regularly while establishing. During Melbourne's dry summer months, maintain consistent moisture while fruit is developing, reducing watering during winter dormancy.
Feed with a quality fruit tree fertiliser in early spring before new growth begins and again in autumn after harvest.
Prune during winter dormancy to maintain an open canopy, improve airflow and encourage productive fruiting wood. Light pruning after harvest can also be carried out if required.
Apply a preventative Bordeaux spray during winter to help protect against common fungal diseases. Once fruit begins developing, use bird netting to protect the crop.
Permanent staking is recommended, as mature trees can carry heavy fruit loads that place additional stress on the branches.
Pollination
Dwarf Tilton Apricot is self-fertile, so only one tree is required to produce fruit. Planting another apricot nearby may improve yields but is not essential.
