Description
Ficus carica ‘Black Genoa’ is a popular fruiting fig tree valued for its large, sweet fruit and excellent flavour. Producing generous crops of figs with purple-green skin and rich red flesh, this variety is an excellent choice for home gardeners wanting to grow their own fruit.
‘Black Genoa’ is known for its ability to produce two crops of fruit per year under suitable growing conditions. The first crop develops on the previous season's growth, followed by a main crop on new growth later in the season.
This self-pollinating variety does not require a second fig tree to produce fruit, making it a practical choice for home orchards and productive gardens.
With its large, spreading growth habit and attractive, deeply lobed leaves, ‘Black Genoa’ also makes an appealing deciduous feature tree, providing summer shade before losing its foliage in winter.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. A warm, sheltered position will encourage healthy growth and help the fruit develop its best flavour.
Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent moisture while fruit is developing. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely during extended hot weather, as irregular watering can affect fruit quality.
Apply compost or a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and fruit production. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertiliser, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of fruit.
Prune during winter while the tree is dormant to maintain a manageable size, remove damaged or crossing branches and encourage an open structure. Avoid excessive pruning if you wish to retain the early crop, as this develops on the previous season's growth.
‘Black Genoa’ is a vigorous, spreading tree, so allow adequate space for its mature canopy. It can also be maintained at a smaller size through regular pruning.
Mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture during Melbourne's warmer months, keeping mulch clear of the trunk.
