Gardenia Florida - 20cm Pot

Gardenia ‘Florida’ is a beautiful evergreen shrub admired for its large, creamy-white flowers, glossy dark green foliage and wonderfully sweet fragrance. A popular choice for Australian gardens, this classic gardenia brings year-round greenery and seasonal flowers to garden beds, courtyards and outdoor living spaces.

The large, creamy-white blooms stand out against the plant's rich green foliage, creating an elegant display from late spring through to autumn.

One of the standout features of Gardenia ‘Florida’ is its strong, sweet perfume, which is particularly noticeable during the evening. This makes it an excellent choice for planting near entrances, windows, garden paths and outdoor entertaining areas where its fragrance can be enjoyed.

With its naturally compact, bushy growth habit, ‘Florida’ works beautifully in mixed garden beds, low hedges and decorative containers. Its attractive foliage also provides structure and colour when the plant is not flowering.

Gardenia ‘Florida’ complements other traditional garden favourites, including azaleas and camellias, making it particularly well suited to established gardens and formal planting schemes.

Mature size: approximately 1.2 metres high × 1 metre wide.

Care & Growing Tips
Position: Plant in full sun to part shade, ideally in a position protected from strong winds and harsh afternoon sun. In Melbourne, morning sunlight with some afternoon protection is a good choice.

Soil: Prefers fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid alkaline or waterlogged conditions.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the warmer months, particularly while flowering. Reduce watering during winter, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings.

Mulching: Apply compost and organic mulch in spring to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and improve soil conditions. Keep mulch clear of the main stems.

Fertilising: Feed with a gardenia-specific fertiliser during spring and summer, following the manufacturer's directions. Fertilisers formulated for acid-loving plants help maintain healthy foliage and flowering.

Pruning: Prune lightly in late spring or early summer, as needed, to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Avoid heavy pruning that may remove developing flower buds.

Flowering Care: Remove spent flowers and damaged foliage as required to maintain a tidy appearance.

Pests: Monitor for aphids, whitefly and scale insects. Treat infestations promptly with a suitable garden pest treatment.

Container Growing: Use a quality potting mix formulated for acid-loving plants and ensure pots have adequate drainage. Check moisture regularly, particularly during hot weather.
