Description
Pomelo ‘Nam Roi’ is a productive evergreen citrus tree known for its exceptionally large, sweet and juicy fruit with very few seeds. Closely related to grapefruit, Pomelo has a distinctive flavour and is particularly enjoyable when eaten fresh.
The impressive fruit develops a thick outer rind that is removed to reveal large, juicy citrus segments. Unlike oranges and mandarins, Pomelo is typically eaten by peeling away the membrane surrounding each segment, leaving the sweet, tender flesh inside.
‘Nam Roi’ is especially valued for its refreshing sweetness, generous fruit size and almost seedless flesh, making it an excellent choice for fresh eating, fruit platters and citrus salads.
With its attractive evergreen foliage and unusual oversized fruit, this variety makes an interesting addition to home orchards and edible gardens, particularly for gardeners looking to grow something a little different from traditional citrus varieties.
Under favourable growing conditions and with appropriate care, grafted trees may begin producing fruit by the second autumn after planting, although establishment and fruiting times can vary.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, preferably in a warm, sheltered position protected from strong winds and heavy frost.
Water regularly while establishing and during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Consistent soil moisture is particularly important during flowering and fruit development, especially given the large size of the fruit.
Feed with a citrus-specific fertiliser in spring and late summer, following the manufacturer's application instructions. Regular feeding helps support healthy foliage, flowering and fruit production.
Apply mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the trunk and graft union.
Prune lightly as required to maintain a balanced shape and remove dead, damaged or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as this may reduce future fruit production.
Remove any shoots developing from below the graft union, as these originate from the rootstock rather than the fruiting variety.
Pomelo trees prefer warm growing conditions, so choose a sunny, protected position in Melbourne gardens. Young trees should be protected from frost, particularly during establishment.
Allow fruit to mature fully on the tree before harvesting. To eat, remove the thick outer rind and peel away the membrane surrounding each segment to enjoy the sweet, juicy flesh.
