Hardenbergia ‘Happy Duo’ is a beautiful combination of two Hardenbergia violacea selections, producing a spectacular display of deep purple and delicate white flowers lightly suffused with lavender-pink. Flowering from winter through to spring, this vigorous Australian native provides months of colour while its dense evergreen foliage creates excellent year-round coverage. Whether grown as a climber or allowed to trail as a groundcover, it is a reliable, low-maintenance choice for Melbourne and south-east Victorian gardens.

Masses of pea-shaped flowers cover the plant during the cooler months, attracting birds and pollinating insects while creating a striking contrast against the lush green foliage. Its vigorous growth makes it ideal for quickly covering fences, pergolas, retaining walls and trellises, or spreading across embankments as an attractive flowering groundcover.

Adaptable and easy to grow, ‘Happy Duo’ thrives in a wide range of garden styles, from native and coastal gardens to cottage and contemporary landscapes.

Mature size: approximately 2–3 metres high × 2–3 metres wide

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun to part shade position. In Melbourne, flowering is generally most prolific in full sun, although plants also perform well with some afternoon shade.

Prefers well-drained soil and grows successfully in clay loam, sandy or humus-rich soils with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Good drainage is essential, particularly in heavier soils.

Water regularly during establishment. Once established, plants are drought tolerant and generally only require occasional watering during extended dry periods.

Feed in early spring or late summer with a low-phosphorus fertiliser formulated for Australian native plants.

Prune firmly after flowering to maintain a compact habit, encourage dense growth and promote abundant flowering the following season.

Frost tolerant once established and well suited to Melbourne's temperate climate. It also performs well in coastal gardens where it tolerates exposed conditions.
