Hardenbergia Happy Wanderer - 20cm Pot

Hardenbergia ‘Happy Wanderer’ is one of Australia's most popular native climbers, admired for its vigorous growth and spectacular display of rich violet-mauve flowers. Flowering from winter through to spring, this evergreen climber quickly transforms fences, pergolas and walls into a colourful feature while providing year-round greenery. Tough, adaptable and easy to grow, it is an excellent choice for Melbourne and south-east Victorian gardens.

Masses of vibrant pea-shaped flowers cover the plant throughout the cooler months, creating a striking contrast against the leathery dark green foliage. The flowers attract bees and other beneficial pollinators, while the dense evergreen growth provides excellent screening and year-round interest.

Naturally twining and fast growing, ‘Happy Wanderer’ is perfect for covering fences, pergolas, arches and retaining walls. It can also be used as a vigorous flowering groundcover where support is not available.

Mature size: approximately 3–5 metres high × 2–4 metres wide (depending on support and pruning)

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun to part shade position. In Melbourne, flowering is generally most prolific in full sun, although plants also perform well with light afternoon shade.

Prefers free-draining soil but is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, provided they do not remain waterlogged.

Water regularly during establishment. Once established, ‘Happy Wanderer’ is drought tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.

Feed lightly in spring with a low-phosphorus fertiliser formulated for Australian native plants if required.

Prune firmly after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage dense growth from the base. Regular pruning prevents plants from becoming sparse near the ground and promotes even coverage over fences and trellises.

Light frost tolerant once established and well suited to Melbourne's temperate climate.
