Description
Hydrangea ‘Black Lace’ is a striking deciduous shrub from the Obsidian™ Hydrangea Collection, admired for its vivid cobalt-blue flowers and distinctive dark stems. The unusual, almost black stems create a beautiful contrast against the fresh green foliage and colourful blooms, making this variety a standout in shaded gardens.
Beginning in late spring, ‘Black Lace’ produces showy clusters of rich blue lacecap flowers, continuing to provide colour through summer and into autumn. Its long, dark stems add another dimension to floral arrangements, making the blooms particularly attractive as cut flowers.
With its compact, rounded growth habit, ‘Black Lace’ is well suited to smaller gardens, courtyards and decorative containers. It is an excellent choice for bringing colour to shaded garden beds, patios and outdoor entertaining areas.
Easy to grow and relatively low maintenance, this distinctive Hydrangea provides seasonal colour and attractive foliage in areas protected from harsh afternoon sun.
Mature size: approximately 1.2 metres high × 1.2 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in part shade to full shade in well-drained soil. In Melbourne gardens, a sheltered position with morning light and protection from hot afternoon sun is ideal.
‘Black Lace’ prefers soil that retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged. Water regularly during establishment and provide occasional deep watering during extended periods of hot, dry weather.
Apply a slow-release, all-purpose fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
The intensity of blue Hydrangea flowers can be influenced by soil pH and aluminium availability. Acidic soil conditions generally encourage stronger blue colouring, although results can vary.
Remove spent flowers as needed to maintain a tidy appearance. Avoid heavy pruning, as Hydrangea macrophylla varieties commonly flower on older wood. If pruning is required, lightly trim after flowering and remove dead or damaged stems.
‘Black Lace’ can also be enjoyed in a decorative container indoors for a short period before being planted outside in a suitable shaded position.
Please note: Hydrangeas are harmful if eaten and may cause skin or eye irritation. Keep away from children and pets who may ingest plant material.
