Hydrangea OBSIDIAN™ Storm Cloud - 20cm Pot

Hydrangea ‘Storm Cloud’ is a striking deciduous shrub from the Obsidian™ Hydrangea Collection, admired for its dramatic dark stems and beautiful colour-changing flowers. Its unusual, almost black stems create a lovely contrast against the fresh green foliage and vibrant blooms.

Beginning in late spring, ‘Storm Cloud’ produces generous clusters of flowers that open in soft lavender-purple tones before maturing to a bold, bright pink. Flowering continues throughout summer, with occasional blooms extending into autumn, providing months of colour in the garden.

One of the standout features of ‘Storm Cloud’ is its long, dark stems, which add an extra element of interest to floral arrangements. The colourful blooms are particularly attractive as cut flowers, making this variety an excellent addition to gardens where flowers can be enjoyed both outdoors and inside the home.

With its compact growth habit, ‘Storm Cloud’ is well suited to smaller gardens, shaded borders, courtyards and decorative containers. Its combination of dark stems and vibrant flowers makes it an attractive feature plant for traditional and contemporary gardens.

Mature size: approximately 1.2 metres high × 1.2 metres wide

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in part shade to full shade in well-drained soil. In Melbourne gardens, a sheltered position with morning sunlight and protection from harsh afternoon sun is ideal.

‘Storm Cloud’ prefers soil that retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged. Water regularly during establishment and provide occasional deep watering during extended periods of hot, dry weather.

Apply a slow-release, all-purpose fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.

Mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and keep the roots cool during summer, ensuring mulch is kept clear of the main stems.

Flower colour in Hydrangea macrophylla varieties can be influenced by soil pH and aluminium availability. However, ‘Storm Cloud’ is specifically selected for its lavender-purple to bright pink colour progression, so changes in soil conditions may affect the exact shades produced.

Remove spent flowers as needed to maintain a tidy appearance. Avoid heavy pruning, as Hydrangea macrophylla varieties commonly flower on older wood. If pruning is required, lightly trim after flowering and remove dead or damaged stems.

‘Storm Cloud’ can also be enjoyed in a decorative container indoors for a short period before being planted outside in a suitable shaded position.

Please note: Hydrangeas are harmful if eaten and may cause skin or eye irritation. Keep away from children and pets who may ingest plant material.
