Hydrangea ‘Red Ball’ is a classic deciduous flowering shrub producing large, rounded flower heads in rich red tones through summer. Its bold blooms and lush green foliage bring plenty of colour to sheltered garden beds during the warmer months.

Like other Hydrangea macrophylla varieties, flower colour can be influenced by soil pH and aluminium availability. For ‘Red Ball’, maintaining a more neutral to slightly alkaline soil helps encourage and retain the red to pink-red colouring. In acidic conditions, the flowers may shift towards mauve or purple tones.

Mature size: approximately 1–2 metres high × 1 metre wide

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a sheltered position with morning sun, filtered light or part shade, protected from hot afternoon sun and drying winds. Hydrangeas prefer fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Water regularly through warm and dry weather, as plants can quickly wilt when allowed to dry out.
To help maintain the red flower colour, avoid products designed to turn hydrangeas blue, including aluminium sulphate. Where soil is naturally acidic, garden lime can be used to gradually raise the pH. Test the soil before making significant adjustments, as excessive lime can affect nutrient availability. Aim for approximately pH 6 to 7 rather than trying to make the soil strongly alkaline.
Prune after flowering as required to maintain a neat shape, removing spent flowers and older or weak stems while retaining healthy growth for the following season.
