Description

Leucadendron ‘Amy’ is a beautiful hybrid selection, prized for its colourful winter bracts, lush evergreen foliage and naturally upright growth. A cross between Leucadendron salignum and Leucadendron laureolum, this outstanding shrub provides year-round structure and vibrant seasonal colour, making it an excellent choice for feature planting, native gardens and cut flower production. Tough, drought tolerant and easy to maintain, it is well suited to Melbourne and south-east Victorian gardens.
Throughout winter and spring, ‘Amy’ develops vibrant coloured bracts that contrast beautifully against the rich green foliage, creating a striking display during the cooler months. Its upright habit and strong stems make it equally attractive in the garden and highly valued for long-lasting floral arrangements.
With its dense, well-branched growth, ‘Amy’ is ideal for feature planting, informal screening, mixed native borders and decorative pots. It combines beautifully with Proteas, Banksias and other Leucadendrons to create colourful, waterwise landscapes.
Mature size: approximately 1.5 metres high × 1.5 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun position with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day for the best foliage colour and flowering display.
Prefers free-draining, slightly acidic soil. Excellent drainage is essential, particularly in Melbourne's heavier clay soils. Improve drainage by planting into a raised garden bed, mound or incorporating coarse sand where required.
Water regularly during establishment, allowing the soil to partially dry between waterings. Once established, the plant is highly drought tolerant and generally only requires watering during extended dry periods.
Feed lightly in spring and autumn using a low-phosphorus fertiliser formulated specifically for Australian native plants or Proteaceae. Avoid general-purpose fertilisers, animal manures and products high in phosphorus.
Apply a layer of pine bark, leaf mulch or gravel around the base to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the main stem.
Prune lightly after flowering or once the colourful bracts have faded to encourage dense growth, improve flowering and maintain a tidy shape. Avoid cutting back into old bare wood without foliage.
Moderately frost tolerant once established and well suited to Melbourne's temperate climate, provided drainage is excellent.
