Leucadendron Harlequin - 14cm Pot

Leucadendron ‘Harlequin’ is a colourful evergreen shrub prized for its vibrant foliage and striking seasonal bracts. A compact selection of Leucadendron salignum, it brings year-round colour and structure to garden beds, native-inspired landscapes and decorative containers.

From late summer through to spring, ‘Harlequin’ develops a beautiful combination of green, red, vibrant orange and soft creamy-pink tones across its foliage and bracts. These changing colours create an eye-catching display, particularly during the cooler months when many other plants have finished flowering.

With its naturally upright growth habit and dense branching, ‘Harlequin’ makes an excellent feature shrub or addition to mixed garden borders. Its colourful stems are also long-lasting when cut, making them ideal for floral arrangements and indoor displays.

Hardy and relatively low maintenance once established, this compact Leucadendron is particularly well suited to sunny positions with excellent drainage.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun, ideally in a position receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Good sunlight encourages strong growth and the best seasonal foliage colour.

‘Harlequin’ prefers well-drained, acidic soil. Sandy or loamy soils are ideal, while raised garden beds or mounded planting areas can help improve drainage in heavier soils. Avoid waterlogged conditions, particularly during Melbourne's wetter winter months.

Water regularly during establishment, allowing the soil to partially dry between watering. Deep, occasional watering is preferable to frequent shallow watering. Once established, plants are drought tolerant and generally require additional watering only during extended dry periods.

Leucadendrons are sensitive to phosphorus. If fertilising is required, use a low-phosphorus fertiliser suitable for Proteaceae, applied sparingly during spring or autumn. Avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers, animal manures and excessive compost.

Apply a layer of pine bark or other suitable mulch to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping it clear of the main stem.

Lightly prune or harvest stems to encourage bushier growth and maintain a compact shape. Avoid cutting heavily into old, leafless wood.

‘Harlequin’ has moderate frost tolerance and is suitable for coastal and exposed gardens with good drainage. In Melbourne's colder, frost-prone areas, choose a sheltered, sunny position.
