Description

Leucadendron ‘Harvest’ is a hardy evergreen shrub valued for its colourful spring bracts, fine-textured foliage and outstanding performance as a cut flower. This attractive selection of Leucadendron stelligerum provides year-round structure, with its vibrant seasonal colour intensifying through spring to create a striking feature in native gardens, contemporary landscapes and decorative pots. Tough, drought tolerant and easy to grow, it is perfectly suited to Melbourne and south-east Victorian gardens.
In spring, the plant produces masses of colourful bracts that contrast beautifully against the fine evergreen foliage, creating a bright, textured display. Its naturally upright, compact habit makes it ideal for feature planting, while the long-lasting stems are highly prized by florists for their excellent vase life and vibrant colour.
Compact and low maintenance, ‘Harvest’ combines beautifully with other Proteaceae such as Proteas, Banksias and Leucospermums, making it an excellent addition to native and waterwise gardens.
Mature size: approximately 1 metre high × 1 metre wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun position with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day for the best foliage colour and flowering display.
Prefers free-draining, slightly acidic soil. Good drainage is essential, particularly in Melbourne's heavier clay soils. Improve drainage by planting into a raised garden bed, mound or incorporating coarse sand where required.
Water regularly during establishment, allowing the soil to partially dry between waterings. Once established, the plant is highly drought tolerant and generally only requires watering during extended dry periods.
Feed lightly in spring and autumn using a low-phosphorus fertiliser formulated specifically for Australian native plants or Proteaceae. Avoid general-purpose fertilisers, animal manures and products high in phosphorus.
Apply a layer of pine bark, leaf mulch or gravel around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the stem.
Prune lightly after flowering or once the colourful bracts begin to fade to encourage bushy growth, improve flowering and maintain a compact shape. Avoid cutting back into old bare wood without foliage.
Light frost tolerant once established and well suited to Melbourne's temperate climate, provided drainage is excellent.
