Description
Leucadendron ‘Strawberry Fair’ is a compact, evergreen shrub valued for its colourful strawberry-red, blush pink and cream bracts. These soft, warm tones provide a beautiful contrast against its fine-textured green foliage, bringing colour and interest to the garden through the flowering season.
With its naturally rounded growth habit, ‘Strawberry Fair’ is particularly well suited to smaller gardens, borders and decorative pots. Its neat form and year-round foliage make it an attractive choice for contemporary landscapes, coastal gardens and native-inspired planting schemes.
A member of the Proteaceae family, this hardy, low-water shrub thrives in sunny positions with excellent drainage. Once established, it is a practical choice for gardens where a compact, colourful plant is needed without excessive maintenance.
Mature size: approximately 60cm high × 60cm wide
Seasonal colour: Winter to spring, with flowering also listed for spring to summer depending on growing conditions.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. For the best colour and growth, choose an open position receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight daily.
Excellent drainage is essential. Leucadendrons dislike waterlogged soil, particularly during Melbourne's cooler, wetter months. In heavy clay soils, consider planting in raised garden beds or containers with a suitable free-draining potting mix.
Water regularly while establishing, then reduce watering once the plant is settled. Established plants have relatively low water requirements, although occasional deep watering may be beneficial during extended hot, dry periods.
Use a low-phosphorus fertiliser suitable for Proteaceae, if feeding is required. Avoid standard high-phosphorus fertilisers and excessive applications of manure.
Lightly tip prune after the main flowering period to maintain a compact, bushy shape. Avoid cutting back into old, leafless wood.
‘Strawberry Fair’ tolerates light frosts but may need protection from severe frost, particularly while young.
