Kaffir Lime (Citrus hystrix) is an essential citrus for food lovers, prized for its intensely fragrant leaves and highly aromatic zest. Instantly recognisable by its unique double-lobed leaves, this tree is a staple in Thai and Southeast Asian cooking, where the fresh leaves are used to add a distinctive citrus flavour to curries, soups and stir-fries.

The foliage is rich green with serrated edges, while new growth emerges in a striking deep purple tone, adding ornamental interest. The tree also produces unusual, bumpy, “crinkled” fruit, valued more for its intensely flavoured zest than its juice.

Compact and highly productive, Kaffir Lime is ideal for kitchen gardens, pots and courtyards, where fresh leaves can be picked as needed.

Mature size: typically 2–4 metres high × 2–3 metres wide
(smaller when grown in pots or pruned)

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun in a sheltered position with well-drained soil.

Water regularly, especially during dry periods and when fruiting. Mulch to retain soil moisture, keeping mulch clear of the trunk.

Feed with a citrus-specific fertiliser in spring and late summer to promote healthy growth and leaf production.

Prune in late winter to maintain shape and remove any dead or crossing branches.

Protect young plants from frost. Established trees can tolerate light frosts.

Ideal for
– Edible and kitchen gardens
– Pots, patios and courtyards
– Fresh herb and citrus cooking
– Fragrant foliage and ornamental use
