Description

Liquidambar styraciflua is a classic deciduous shade tree valued for its spectacular autumn colour and strong seasonal presence. Well suited to larger gardens, parks and avenue planting, this hardy ornamental tree develops into a striking landscape feature over time. Its star-shaped foliage, upright form and rich autumn tones make it one of the most recognised deciduous trees for cool and temperate Australian gardens.
In spring and summer, Liquidambar carries glossy green leaves with finely toothed edges that create dense shade through the warmer months. As temperatures cool in autumn, the foliage transforms into dramatic shades of red, orange, burgundy and purple, often displaying multiple colours across the tree at once. Small spring flowers are followed by distinctive spiky seed pods that remain hanging from the branches into winter, adding additional seasonal texture and interest.
Young trees have a more upright, conical shape before gradually broadening and rounding with age into a substantial shade tree. Liquidambar is commonly planted as a feature tree, in larger residential landscapes and public spaces where its autumn display can be appreciated from a distance. Once established, it is a reliable and long-lived tree that provides excellent summer shade while allowing winter light through after leaf drop.
Mature size: approximately 20 metres high × 6–10 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Liquidambar styraciflua in a full sun position for the strongest autumn colour and healthiest growth.
Prefers deep, well-drained soil but adapts to a range of soil types including loam and clay provided drainage is reasonable. Performs best with regular moisture during establishment.
Water deeply and consistently while young. Established trees are relatively hardy but benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring if required, particularly in poorer soils.
Minimal pruning is needed beyond removing lower branches or shaping while young. Prune during winter dormancy if necessary.
Suitable for cool to temperate climates. Best planted where there is adequate room for mature growth and canopy spread.
Ideal for
