Loquat ‘Bessell Brown’ is a hardy evergreen fruit tree prized for its attractive glossy foliage, fragrant flowers and delicious sweet fruit. This popular variety produces generous crops of large, golden-yellow loquats with juicy pale-yellow flesh and a mild, refreshing flavour. Combining ornamental appeal with reliable fruit production, it is an excellent choice for home gardens across Melbourne and south-east Victoria.

Flowering through autumn and winter, the tree produces clusters of fragrant creamy-white flowers that are followed by large, round fruit ready to harvest in spring. The smooth yellow skin surrounds juicy, pale-yellow flesh with a pleasantly sweet, mild flavour. The fruit is delicious eaten fresh and is also ideal for jams, chutneys, desserts and preserving.

‘Bessell Brown’ forms a dense, rounded canopy of large, glossy green leaves that provide year-round interest and valuable shade. Its attractive foliage and reliable fruiting make it equally suited as a feature tree, backyard fruit tree or edible landscape specimen.

Mature size: approximately 4–8 metres high × 4–6 metres wide
Pollination: Loquat ‘Bessell Brown’ is self-fertile, so only one tree is required to produce fruit.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun position for the best flowering and fruit production, although light afternoon shade is beneficial in hotter locations.

Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Loquats adapt well to a range of soil types, including the heavier clay soils common throughout Melbourne, provided drainage is adequate.

Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Loquats are relatively drought tolerant, although deep watering during prolonged dry periods will improve fruit size and quality.

Feed in early spring and again after harvest with a quality fruit tree fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and reliable crops.

Prune lightly after harvest to maintain shape, improve airflow and keep the tree at a manageable size if required.

Mulch well to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds and keep the root zone cool during Melbourne's warmer months.

While generally frost hardy, protect young trees from severe frosts during their first few winters.
