Description

Loquat ‘Sewells’ is a hardy, evergreen fruit tree renowned for its reliable cropping, attractive glossy foliage and excellent performance in cooler climates. Well suited to gardens throughout Melbourne and Victoria, this easy-to-grow variety produces sweet, crisp fruit earlier in the season than many other loquats, making it a rewarding addition to the home orchard.
Flowering through autumn and winter, the tree produces clusters of fragrant creamy-white flowers followed by small, early-ripening fruit in spring. The fruit has smooth yellow skin with crisp white flesh, a mild sweet flavour and relatively small seeds, giving plenty of edible fruit. Its slightly thicker skin also helps protect the fruit as it matures.
Beyond its harvest, ‘Sewells’ is an attractive ornamental tree with large, glossy dark green leaves that provide year-round structure and shade. Its naturally rounded growth habit makes it equally suitable as a feature tree, screening plant or productive backyard fruit tree.
Mature size: approximately 4–6 metres high × 4–8 metres wide.
Pollination: Loquat ‘Sewells’ is self-fertile, so only one tree is required to produce fruit.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun position for the best flowering and fruit production. It will also tolerate light afternoon shade in warmer locations.
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It adapts well to the clay soils commonly found throughout Melbourne, provided drainage is improved where necessary.
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Loquats are relatively drought tolerant, although deep watering during extended dry periods will improve fruit quality and crop size.
Feed in early spring and again after harvest with a quality fruit tree fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and reliable fruiting.
Prune lightly after harvest to maintain shape, remove crowded branches and keep the tree at a manageable size.
Mulch well to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds and protect roots during Melbourne's hot, dry summers.
Highly suited to Victorian conditions and tolerant of winter frosts once established.
