Description
Magnolia ‘Burgundy Star’ is a stunning deciduous magnolia with a naturally compact, upright habit, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens where a dramatic spring display is desired. Grafted for improved vigour and performance, this beautiful variety produces masses of large, richly coloured burgundy flowers on bare branches from late winter into early spring, creating an unforgettable feature before the foliage emerges.
The elegant star-shaped flowers are made up of numerous slender petals in rich burgundy tones, giving the tree a refined yet striking appearance. As flowering finishes, fresh green foliage develops to form a dense, rounded canopy that provides cooling summer shade before turning soft yellow in autumn, extending its seasonal interest well beyond flowering.
With its narrow growth habit and non-invasive root system, 'Burgundy Star' is well suited to modern gardens, courtyards and feature planting close to the home. It combines beautifully with other spring favourites such as Camellias, Azaleas and Hellebores for a spectacular seasonal display.
Mature size: approximately 4.5 metres high × 2 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun to part shade position. In Melbourne, a sheltered location protected from strong winds will produce the best flowering display and help protect the large blooms from damage.
Prefers fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. If planting into Melbourne's heavier clay soils, improve drainage by incorporating compost before planting.
Water regularly during establishment and throughout extended dry periods. While reasonably drought tolerant once established, consistent moisture encourages healthier growth and heavier flowering. Avoid waterlogged soils.
Feed with a quality general-purpose fertiliser in early spring and apply a fresh layer of organic mulch each year to conserve moisture and improve soil health.
Prune only if required in late summer or autumn to remove damaged or crossing branches and maintain its natural shape. Heavy pruning is rarely necessary.
Generally pest-free, although occasional aphids or scale insects may appear and can be treated if required.
Ideal for
– Feature tree planting
– Small gardens and courtyards
– Front gardens
– Specimen lawn tree
– Woodland-style gardens
– Late winter and spring flowering displays
– Planting alongside Camellias, Azaleas and Hellebores
