Description
Magnolia ‘Vulcan’ is one of the most spectacular flowering deciduous magnolias, admired for its enormous, richly coloured blooms that create a breathtaking display in late winter and early spring. Before the foliage emerges, the bare branches become covered in large goblet-shaped flowers in deep red-purple tones that can appear almost crimson. Grafted for improved vigour and performance, this outstanding variety makes a striking feature tree in Melbourne gardens.
The impressive flowers can reach up to 20cm across, creating a dramatic display when little else is flowering. As the blooms fade, lush green foliage emerges to form an elegant canopy that provides shade throughout summer before dropping in autumn. With its upright form and stunning seasonal interest, 'Vulcan' is equally beautiful as a standalone specimen or incorporated into mixed garden beds.
Well suited to Melbourne's cool winters and mild springs, this magnolia performs best in a sheltered position where the flowers are protected from strong winds and late frosts. Its non-invasive root system also makes it suitable for planting closer to the home than many larger trees.
Mature size: approximately 5 metres high × 3 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun to part shade position. In Melbourne, a sheltered location protected from strong winds will help preserve the large flowers and encourage the best display each spring.
Prefers fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. If planting into Melbourne's heavier clay soils, improve drainage with compost before planting.
Water regularly during establishment and during extended dry periods. While reasonably drought tolerant once established, consistent moisture will encourage stronger growth and improved flowering. Avoid waterlogged soils.
Feed with a quality general-purpose fertiliser in early spring after flowering begins. Apply a fresh layer of organic mulch each spring to help conserve moisture and improve soil health.
Prune only if necessary in late summer or autumn to remove damaged or crossing branches or to maintain shape. Heavy pruning is rarely required.
Generally pest-free, although occasional aphids or scale insects may occur and can be treated if necessary.
