Description
Mandevilla Aloha ‘Burgundy’ is a vigorous, evergreen climbing vine admired for its large, rich burgundy trumpet-shaped flowers, glossy green foliage and long flowering season. Bred for Australian conditions, this colourful variety is an excellent choice for adding deep, warm colour to gardens, courtyards and outdoor living spaces.
The striking burgundy flowers feature delicate yellow throats, creating a beautiful contrast against the plant's dark green, glossy, oval-shaped leaves. Flowers appear from mid-spring through to late summer, with flowering interest potentially extending into autumn under suitable conditions.
Its vigorous climbing habit makes ‘Burgundy’ particularly well suited to trellises, arbours, fences and other garden structures. The stems can be trained upwards to create a colourful vertical display or allowed to trail naturally from decorative containers.
Without climbing support, the plant can also develop a sprawling, shrub-like habit, making it a versatile choice for garden beds, raised planters and outdoor spaces.
Part of the Aloha Mandevilla range, ‘Burgundy’ has been bred to cope with hot, dry Australian summers and can tolerate light frost. In Melbourne's cooler climate, it performs best in a warm, sheltered position protected from heavier frosts.
Its rich burgundy flowers pair beautifully with white, pale pink and soft green planting schemes, making it an attractive choice for both contemporary and tropical-style gardens.
Mature size: approximately 1.5 metres high × 1.5 metres wide, depending on growing conditions, pruning and available support.
Care & Growing Tips
Position: Plant in full sun to part shade. A warm, sheltered position encourages healthy growth and flowering.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil. For container growing, use a quality premium potting mix with good drainage.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, the plant can tolerate dry periods but benefits from supplementary watering during prolonged hot weather.
Mulching: Apply organic mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch clear of the main stems.
Fertilising: Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring and autumn to support healthy growth and flowering, following the manufacturer's directions.
Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape, control growth and encourage fresh shoots. Remove damaged stems and untidy growth as required.
Flowering Care: Remove spent flowers and damaged leaves as needed to keep the plant looking tidy.
Support: Provide a trellis, climbing frame, arbour or garden wire for vertical growth. Alternatively, allow stems to trail from a large container or spread naturally.
Frost Protection: Aloha Mandevilla can tolerate light frost, but protection from heavier frosts is recommended in Melbourne. Move container-grown plants into a sheltered, bright position during colder winter weather.
Pests: Monitor for spider mites, mealybugs and aphids. Treat infestations promptly with a suitable garden pest treatment.
