Description

Dwarf Valencia Orange ‘Pipsqueak’ is a compact evergreen citrus tree producing full-sized, sweet and exceptionally juicy oranges, perfect for fresh eating and homemade orange juice.

Valencia oranges are particularly valued for their high juice content and refreshing flavour, making them one of the most popular orange varieties for juicing. The fruit typically comes into season during spring, providing a delicious harvest when many other orange varieties have finished fruiting.

Part of the Pipsqueak dwarf citrus range, this Valencia Orange is grafted onto Flying Dragon rootstock, which naturally restricts the tree's growth while allowing it to produce normal-sized fruit.

Reaching approximately 1.5 to 2 metres tall, ‘Pipsqueak’ is an excellent choice for smaller gardens, courtyards and large containers. Its compact growth makes it easier to manage and harvest than a traditional full-sized orange tree.

With its attractive evergreen foliage, fragrant citrus blossoms and productive fruiting habit, Dwarf Valencia Orange is a practical and rewarding addition to the home garden.

Mature size: approximately 1.5–2 metres high

Rootstock: Flying Dragon (dwarfing)

Harvest: Spring, depending on seasonal conditions

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, preferably in a sheltered position protected from strong winds and heavy frost.

Water regularly while establishing and during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Consistent moisture is particularly important during flowering and fruit development to support healthy fruit production.

Feed with a citrus-specific fertiliser in spring and late summer, following the manufacturer's application instructions. Regular feeding helps maintain healthy foliage and supports flowering and fruiting.

Apply mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the trunk and graft union.

Prune lightly as required to maintain a compact, balanced shape and remove dead, damaged or crossing branches. Dwarf citrus generally requires less pruning than full-sized varieties.

Remove any shoots that develop from below the graft union, as these originate from the rootstock rather than the fruiting variety.

When growing in containers, use a quality citrus potting mix and choose a large pot with excellent drainage. Container-grown trees will require more frequent watering and feeding than those planted in the ground.

Protect young trees from frost, particularly during establishment. A warm, sheltered position is ideal for growing citrus in Melbourne gardens.

Allow fruit to ripen fully on the tree before harvesting, as oranges do not continue to ripen once picked.
