Description
Nellie Kelly Non-Grafted Black Passionfruit is a fast-growing, vigorous climbing vine that produces beautiful flowers and delicious, tangy passionfruit during the warmer months.
Unlike grafted passionfruit varieties, this vine grows on its own roots and is particularly suited to coarse or sandy soils, where grafted passionfruit may be more prone to unwanted rootstock suckering.
In spring, large, striking purple and white flowers appear along the vine, followed by small to medium-sized, round passionfruit during the hot summer months.
The fruit develops a deep purple to almost black skin when ripe, with a tangy, tart pulp that becomes sweeter when allowed to fully ripen on the vine. Under suitable growing conditions, a healthy vine may produce around 100 passionfruit in a season.
Its rapid growth makes it an excellent choice for covering trellises, fences and other sturdy garden structures, providing lush green foliage and seasonal fruit.
This non-grafted variety performs best in warmer, frost-free climates. While passionfruit can be grown in Melbourne, Non-Grafted Black Passionfruit is less suited to exposed, frost-prone gardens and should be planted in a warm, sheltered position with protection from winter cold.
Mature size: A vigorous climbing vine that requires a substantial support structure. Final height and spread will depend on growing conditions, available support and pruning.
Expected lifespan: approximately 3 years, depending on growing conditions.
Care & Growing Tips
Position: Plant in full sun in a warm, sheltered position protected from strong winds. Choose a frost-free location wherever possible, as this variety is best suited to warmer climates.
Soil: Prefers well-drained soil and is particularly suitable for coarse or sandy soil types. Improve soil with organic matter before planting, while ensuring excess water can drain freely.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent moisture throughout flowering and fruit development. Provide additional water during hot, dry weather, but avoid waterlogged conditions.
Mulching: Apply organic mulch around the base to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and reduce weeds. Keep mulch clear of the main stem.
Fertilising: Apply a complete organic fertiliser during the growing season, following the manufacturer's directions. Water thoroughly after application.
Pruning: Prune as needed to manage vigorous growth, remove damaged stems and maintain the desired shape. In Melbourne, avoid heavy pruning until the risk of significant frost has passed.
Support: Provide a sturdy trellis, fence or climbing frame. The vine grows rapidly and requires adequate support as it matures.
Frost Protection: This non-grafted variety is best suited to frost-free conditions. In Melbourne, choose a warm, protected microclimate and protect young plants from cold weather and frost. A grafted variety may be a more suitable option for colder, frost-prone gardens.
Flowering: Large purple and white flowers generally appear during spring, followed by developing fruit through the warmer months.
Harvesting: Fruit generally ripens during summer. Allow passionfruit to develop its characteristic deep purple to black skin and ripen fully on the vine for a sweeter flavour.
Fruit Production: Under favourable conditions, a healthy vine may produce approximately 100 passionfruit during the fruiting season. Actual yields will vary with climate, plant health and growing conditions.
