Description
Nellie Kelly Non-Grafted Panama Red Passionfruit is a vigorous, fast-growing climbing vine known for its large, red-skinned passionfruit, attractive flowers and lush green foliage.
Unlike grafted passionfruit varieties, this vine grows on its own roots, making it a useful option for gardens with coarse or sandy soils, where grafted plants may be more prone to unwanted rootstock suckering.
During spring, the vine produces striking passionfruit flowers with white and purple markings, followed by large, round to oval fruit that develop a distinctive red to reddish-purple skin as they ripen.
The fruit contains aromatic, juicy pulp with a pleasantly sweet-tart flavour. Panama Red passionfruit are particularly appealing for fresh eating, desserts, drinks and baking.
Its vigorous climbing habit makes it well suited to covering sturdy trellises, fences and pergolas, providing leafy coverage and seasonal fruit.
Panama Red is best suited to warm, frost-free conditions. In Melbourne, this non-grafted variety should be grown in a sunny, sheltered position protected from cold winds and winter frosts. It is less suitable for exposed or frost-prone gardens.
Mature size: A vigorous climbing vine capable of covering a substantial area. Final height and spread will depend on growing conditions, available support and pruning.
Care & Growing Tips
Position: Plant in full sun in a warm, sheltered location protected from strong winds and frost. Good sunlight is important for healthy growth, flowering and fruit production.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Non-grafted passionfruit can be particularly useful in coarse or sandy soils, provided adequate moisture and nutrients are maintained.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture throughout flowering and fruit development. Provide supplementary watering during Melbourne's hot, dry summers, but avoid waterlogged conditions.
Mulching: Apply organic mulch around the base to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and reduce weeds. Keep mulch clear of the main stem.
Fertilising: Apply a complete organic fertiliser during the growing season, following the manufacturer's directions. Water thoroughly after application.
Pruning: Prune to manage vigorous growth, remove damaged stems and encourage healthy new shoots. In Melbourne, wait until the risk of significant frost has passed before carrying out heavier pruning.
Support: Provide a sturdy trellis, fence, pergola or climbing frame. Passionfruit vines grow rapidly and require strong support as they mature.
Frost Protection: Non-Grafted Panama Red is sensitive to frost and performs best in warmer climates. In Melbourne, choose a protected microclimate and provide additional protection during cold weather. A grafted passionfruit may be more suitable for frost-prone locations.
Flowering: Decorative white and purple passionfruit flowers generally appear during the warmer growing season, followed by developing fruit.
Harvesting: Allow fruit to develop its characteristic red to reddish-purple colour and ripen fully for the best flavour. Fruit may naturally drop from the vine when ripe.
Fruit Production: Good sunlight, consistent watering and regular feeding help support flowering and fruit development. Actual yields depend on climate, plant maturity and growing conditions.
