Persimmon ‘Fuyu’ is Australia's most popular non-astringent persimmon, loved for its crisp, sweet fruit that can be enjoyed while still firm. This attractive deciduous fruit tree combines delicious harvests with outstanding ornamental appeal, producing vibrant autumn foliage before its bright orange fruit ripens. An excellent choice for Melbourne gardens, it is easy to grow and highly rewarding for home orchard enthusiasts.

In spring, the tree produces fresh green foliage that develops into a dense canopy through summer. As autumn arrives, the leaves transform into brilliant shades of orange, red and gold before falling to reveal the striking bright orange fruit hanging from the bare branches. The fruit has glossy orange skin and sweet, crisp flesh with no astringency, meaning it can be eaten fresh straight from the tree while still firm, unlike traditional persimmon varieties that require softening before eating.

'Fuyu' is a reliable producer in Melbourne and south-east Victoria, where the warm summers and cool winters encourage excellent fruit quality and autumn colour. Its compact growth habit also makes it well suited to smaller backyards and productive home gardens.

Mature size: approximately 2–3 metres high × 2–3 metres wide.
Pollination: Persimmon ‘Fuyu’ is self-fertile, so only one tree is needed to produce fruit.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun position for the best flowering, fruit production and autumn colour. Choose a sheltered location protected from strong winds, which can damage young growth and developing fruit.

Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. If planting into Melbourne's heavier clay soils, improve drainage with compost or plant on a slight mound.

Water regularly during establishment. Once established, persimmons are relatively drought tolerant, although deep watering during prolonged dry periods will improve fruit size and quality.

Feed in early spring and again after harvest with a quality slow-release fertiliser or pelletised manure. Citrus fertiliser also provides suitable nutrition for healthy growth and fruit production.

Prune lightly during winter dormancy to maintain shape, improve airflow and remove any dead or crossing branches.

Mulch around the base to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and keep roots cool during Melbourne's hot summer weather.
