Description

Picea smithiana, commonly known as the West Himalayan Spruce or Morinda Spruce, is a graceful evergreen conifer admired for its long pendulous branchlets and elegant weeping appearance. This striking specimen tree develops a tall pyramidal form with layered horizontal branches that become increasingly dramatic as the tree matures. Its flowing curtain-like foliage gives it a softer, more relaxed character than many traditional spruces.
The rich green needles are complemented by bluish young shoots, adding seasonal contrast and fresh colour through spring. One of the tree’s most distinctive features is the exceptionally long hanging branchlets, which can cascade downward over a metre on mature specimens. This creates a remarkable draping effect that is best appreciated when planted in an open position where the full form of the tree can develop naturally.
West Himalayan Spruce is best suited to larger gardens, parkland settings and cool-climate landscapes where its graceful habit can become a true focal point. Its broad layered structure and weeping foliage pair beautifully with deciduous trees, woodland planting and expansive lawns. Over time, it develops into a majestic evergreen specimen with strong year-round architectural presence.
Mature size: approximately 2 metres high in 10 years, eventually becoming a tall large tree over time
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Picea smithiana in a full sun to lightly shaded position with adequate space for its mature size and spreading branches.
Prefers cool climates and performs best in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Consistent soil moisture during establishment will encourage healthy growth.
Water regularly while young, particularly during warmer weather and dry periods. Mulching around the base will help maintain cool root conditions.
Apply a slow-release fertiliser suitable for conifers in spring if needed.
Very little pruning is required. Allow the natural pendulous branching habit to develop for the best ornamental effect.
Best suited to cool temperate climates with milder summers. Protection from extreme dry heat is beneficial.
Ideal for
– Large specimen tree planting
