Pieris japonica ‘Mountain Fire’ is a striking evergreen shrub grown for its vivid red new growth and cascading clusters of delicate white flowers. Often called the Lily-of-the-Valley bush, this elegant plant brings strong seasonal contrast to shaded gardens, with fresh foliage colour that stands out beautifully against its glossy dark green leaves.

In late winter to spring, ‘Mountain Fire’ produces hanging sprays of small white bell-shaped flowers that resemble lily-of-the-valley blooms and attract pollinators into the garden. As the flowering display finishes, brilliant bright red new foliage emerges across the plant, creating one of its most recognisable features. Over time, the leaves gradually deepen to rich green, giving the shrub year-round structure and colour.

This evergreen shrub works particularly well in woodland-style gardens, shaded borders and courtyard plantings where protection from harsh afternoon sun helps maintain healthy foliage. Pieris ‘Mountain Fire’ pairs naturally with azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons due to their similar growing requirements. Its upright, bushy growth habit makes it suitable for feature planting, layered shrub borders and larger containers in sheltered outdoor spaces.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant Pieris ‘Mountain Fire’ in part shade or filtered light. Protection from hot afternoon sun and drying winds is important, particularly in warmer Australian climates.

Prefers cool, moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Best growth is achieved in slightly acidic soil conditions similar to those preferred by camellias and azaleas.

Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent moisture during dry periods, especially through summer.

Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and remove spent flower stems if desired.

Mulching around the root zone will help retain moisture and keep roots cool during warmer weather.

Ideal for
– Woodland and shaded garden planting
– Feature shrubs in sheltered gardens
– Pairing with camellias and azaleas
– Courtyard and cottage gardens
– Evergreen screening and borders
– Large pots and container growing
