Pinus densiflora ‘Pendula’, commonly known as Weeping Japanese Red Pine, is a graceful evergreen conifer valued for its cascading branches and soft flowing habit. This sculptural form of the Japanese Red Pine develops into a spreading mound of rich green needles, making it an excellent feature for Japanese-style gardens, rockeries and waterside planting.

Its gently weeping branches create a relaxed natural form that softens rocks, retaining walls and gravel gardens. Depending on how it is trained or grafted, the plant may remain as a low spreading groundcover or develop into an elevated cascading specimen with strong architectural character. The soft green needles remain attractive year-round and contrast beautifully against stone, water and darker evergreen foliage.

Weeping Japanese Red Pine is particularly effective planted near ponds, amongst boulders or spilling over retaining walls where its cascading habit can be fully appreciated. It also responds well to shaping and selective pruning, allowing gardeners to guide the plant into unique forms over time.

Mature size: approximately 1–2 metres high × 2–4 metres wide depending on training and grafting

Care & Growing Tips
Plant Pinus densiflora ‘Pendula’ in a full sun position for best growth and foliage density, though it will tolerate light dappled shade.

Requires well-drained soil and performs well in sandy, gravelly or rocky conditions. Avoid poorly drained or waterlogged positions.

Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, it is relatively drought tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.

Apply a slow-release fertiliser suitable for conifers in spring if needed.

Prune or train selectively to maintain the desired size and shape. Branches can be guided over rocks, walls or supports to enhance the cascading effect.

Suitable for cool to temperate climates and tolerant of frost once established.

Ideal for
– Japanese-style gardens
– Cascading over rocks and retaining walls
– Feature planting near ponds
– Architectural evergreen structure
– Bonsai-inspired and collector gardens
– Low spreading conifer displays
