Description

Pinus parviflora Glauca, commonly known as Japanese White Pine, is a highly regarded ornamental conifer prized for its soft blue-green foliage, sculptural branching and strong architectural form. Widely used in Japanese gardens and bonsai, this elegant evergreen develops into a character-filled large shrub or small tree that brings year-round structure and calm texture to the landscape.
The fine needles carry an attractive silvery-blue tone that contrasts beautifully against stone, gravel and darker evergreen planting. In spring, mature plants often produce masses of vivid pink male cones, sometimes referred to as “flowers”, which create a striking seasonal display against the cool-toned foliage. Decorative seed cones follow, adding further texture and ornamental appeal as the tree matures.
Japanese White Pine is especially valued for its naturally artistic growth habit and its ability to respond well to selective pruning and shaping. This makes it ideal for Japanese-style gardens, courtyard landscapes and specimen planting where form and structure are important. Over time, it develops layered branching and a sculptural presence that becomes increasingly attractive with age. Its slower growth also makes it highly suitable for bonsai and long-term container growing.
Mature size: approximately 3–5 metres high × 2–4 metres wide over time
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Japanese White Pine in a full sun to lightly shaded position for best foliage colour and healthy growth.
Requires well-drained soil and performs particularly well in sandy, gravelly or free-draining loam soils. Avoid wet or poorly drained conditions.
Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, it is relatively drought tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.
Apply a slow-release fertiliser suitable for conifers in spring if needed to encourage healthy growth.
Selective pruning can be carried out to shape the plant and enhance its architectural form, particularly in Japanese-style gardens and bonsai culture.
Suitable for cool to temperate climates and tolerant of frost once established.
Ideal for
– Japanese-style gardens
– Bonsai and collector planting
– Architectural feature planting
– Pots and container growing
– Rockeries and gravel gardens
– Evergreen structure and year-round texture
