Pinus Patula Mexican Pine - 25cm Pot

Pinus patula, commonly known as the Mexican Weeping Pine, is a graceful evergreen tree prized for its long flowing needles, textured reddish bark and naturally pendulous growth habit. With soft weeping foliage and a broad spreading canopy, this impressive pine brings a relaxed, almost wild character to larger landscapes, parks and rural properties.

The fine blue-green to deep green needles hang elegantly from the branches, creating movement and softness throughout the year. As the tree matures, the trunk develops deeply fissured reddish-brown bark that adds strong visual texture and contrast against the flowing foliage. Large ornamental cones further enhance its character, remaining on the branches long after forming and contributing to the tree’s rugged ornamental appeal.

Mexican Weeping Pine develops into a substantial specimen tree over time, forming a broad canopy that provides filtered shade in warmer climates. Its naturally graceful form makes it particularly effective as a standalone feature in open lawns and expansive landscapes where its shape can be appreciated fully. It is also useful as a windbreak or screening tree on larger properties, especially in cooler and temperate regions where it performs strongly.

Care & Growing Tips

Prefers well-drained soil and adapts to a wide range of soil types provided drainage remains reliable. Mulching around the base will help retain moisture and maintain a cool root zone.

Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, it is relatively drought tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.

Apply a slow-release fertiliser for conifers in spring if needed, particularly in poorer soils.

Very little pruning is required. Remove damaged or lower branches only if necessary while allowing the natural form to develop.

Frost tolerant and suited to cool, temperate and some warmer climates provided adequate moisture is available during establishment.
