Description

Dwarf Spring Satin™ is a unique plum and apricot hybrid, known as a plumcot, combining the rich sweetness of a plum with the smooth texture and flavour of an apricot. This compact fruit tree produces full-sized, delicious fruit on a dwarf tree, making it ideal for Melbourne backyards, courtyards and large pots. Naturally resistant to several common plum diseases, it is an easy-care choice for home orchard enthusiasts looking for something a little different.
In spring, the tree is covered in attractive blossom before producing medium-sized, round fruit that ripens from November to early December. The fruit features rich dark plum-coloured skin surrounding vibrant yellow flesh with a sweet, tender flavour. Excellent eaten fresh, Spring Satin™ is equally suited to stewing, jams, baking and preserving.
Like all trees in the dwarf range, Spring Satin™ produces full-sized fruit on a compact tree that is easy to harvest and maintain. It is a prolific bearer and, because of the heavy crops it can carry, permanent staking is recommended to provide long-term support.
Mature size: approximately 2.5 metres high × 2.5 metres wide.
Pollination: Dwarf Spring Satin™ is partially self-fertile and will produce heavier crops when planted with another compatible plum, plumcot or apricot that flowers at the same time, such as Fireball™ Apricot.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun position with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day for the best flowering and fruit production. In Melbourne's hotter summers, protection from harsh afternoon sun and hot northerly winds can help reduce fruit scorch.
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. In Melbourne's heavier clay soils, improve drainage by planting into a raised garden bed or mound. It also performs exceptionally well in large pots using a premium-quality potting mix.
Water deeply and regularly while establishing. During Melbourne's dry summer months, maintain consistent soil moisture while fruit is developing, reducing watering during winter dormancy.
Feed in early spring and again in autumn with a quality fruit tree fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and reliable fruit production.
Prune during winter dormancy to maintain an open canopy, improve airflow and encourage strong fruiting wood. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches as required.
Apply a preventative Bordeaux spray during winter and again just before bud swell to help protect against common fungal diseases. Although Spring Satin™ has good resistance to bacterial spot and bacterial canker, preventative care is still recommended. Protect ripening fruit with bird netting as harvest approaches.
Permanent staking is recommended, as mature trees can carry heavy fruit loads that place additional stress on the branches.
