Prunus Kojo No Mai Flowering Cherry - 40cm Pot

Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai’ is a charming, compact deciduous flowering cherry, admired for its delicate spring blossoms, colourful autumn foliage and distinctive zig-zag branching. Its naturally irregular, twisting growth habit gives it an almost bonsai-like appearance, making it an attractive feature throughout the seasons.

In early spring, the bare branches become covered in small, pale pink buds that open into delicate white to blush-pink flowers. Fresh green foliage follows, providing a soft backdrop through the warmer months before turning beautiful shades of orange and red in autumn.

Even after the leaves have fallen, the unusual zig-zag branches create an interesting silhouette in the winter garden.

With its slow-growing, compact habit, ‘Kojo-no-mai’ is particularly well suited to smaller gardens, rockeries and large decorative containers. It can also be grown as a low informal hedge or feature shrub.

Mature size: approximately 1.5–2 metres high × 1.5–2 metres wide, depending on growing conditions.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade in fertile, well-drained soil. A position receiving plenty of sunlight will encourage the best flowering and autumn foliage colour.
Water regularly while establishing and during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Apply mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping it clear of the trunk.
‘Kojo-no-mai’ naturally develops an attractive, irregular shape and generally requires very little pruning. If necessary, lightly prune immediately after flowering to remove dead, damaged or crossing branches and maintain the desired shape.
Avoid heavy pruning, as this can spoil its distinctive branching habit and reduce future flowering.
