Nellie Kelly Thornless Tulameen Raspberry is a productive, deciduous fruiting shrub known for its sweet, juicy raspberries and thornless canes, making harvesting easier and more enjoyable.

Specifically propagated by Nellie Kelly to help avoid disease problems that can affect other raspberry varieties, this raspberry is a great choice for gardeners wanting to grow fresh fruit at home.

In spring, clusters of delicate white flowers appear along the canes, followed by sweet, flavourful raspberries during summer and autumn. The berries are best picked when plump, firm and fully ripe.

One of the standout features of this variety is its thornless growth, allowing fruit to be harvested without the discomfort of prickly stems. This makes it particularly appealing for home gardeners and families who enjoy picking fruit straight from the garden.

The berries are delicious eaten fresh, served with cream or added to homemade muffins, brownies, pavlovas and other desserts. Freshly picked raspberries are delicate and should be refrigerated promptly to maintain their quality.

Tulameen Raspberry grows as a deciduous, suckering shrub with upright canes that benefit from staking or support. It performs particularly well in cool temperate climates, making it a suitable choice for Melbourne gardens with the right growing conditions.

Mature size: approximately 2 metres high. Spread will depend on growing conditions and management of suckering growth.

Care & Growing Tips
Position: Plant in full sun in a sheltered position protected from strong winds. Raspberries perform best in cool temperate climates and require good sunlight for healthy growth and fruit production.

Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid waterlogged conditions, particularly during Melbourne's wetter winter months.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent moisture throughout flowering and fruit development. Provide additional water during hot, dry summer weather.

Mulching: Apply organic mulch around the base to help retain moisture, keep roots cool and reduce weeds. Keep mulch clear of the main canes.

Fertilising: Feed with an organic fertiliser such as blood and bone, aged chicken manure or well-rotted cow manure mixed with compost. Apply according to product directions and avoid placing fresh manure directly against the plant.

Pruning: Remove canes that have already produced fruit by cutting them off at ground level once they have finished cropping. Retain healthy new canes for future fruit production.

Support: Provide stakes, a trellis or a suitable wire support system to keep the canes upright and make harvesting easier.

Suckering Growth: Raspberries naturally produce new shoots from their root system. Remove unwanted suckers to keep the plant contained and maintain a manageable growing area.

Harvesting: Pick raspberries when they are plump, firm, fully coloured and ripe. Handle gently to avoid bruising.

Fruit Storage: Keep freshly harvested raspberries out of direct sunlight and refrigerate promptly. Raspberries are best enjoyed soon after picking.

Seasonal Care: As a deciduous plant, Tulameen Raspberry loses its leaves during winter before producing fresh growth in spring.
