Redcurrant is an attractive, deciduous fruiting shrub that produces generous clusters of bright red berries with a refreshing sweet-tart flavour. Easy to grow in the home garden, this productive shrub is a lovely addition to edible gardens, kitchen gardens and mixed planting beds.

During spring, fresh green foliage emerges, followed by small flowers that develop into hanging clusters of glossy, bright red currants. The berries ripen during mid to late summer, creating a colourful display against the plant's green leaves.

Each berry measures approximately 1cm in diameter and has a delicate flavour that balances sweetness with a pleasant tartness. Redcurrants are naturally rich in vitamin C and can be enjoyed fresh or used in a variety of homemade recipes.

The fruit is particularly well suited to jams, jellies, juices, pies and desserts, where its bright colour and tangy flavour can be appreciated. Berries can also be frozen for later use.

Redcurrants produce fruit on growth formed during the previous year, so thoughtful pruning is important for maintaining healthy plants and reliable harvests.

With its compact, bushy growth habit, Redcurrant is well suited to smaller productive gardens and can also be incorporated into mixed garden beds. It performs well in Melbourne's temperate climate, particularly in positions protected from intense summer heat.

Mature size: approximately 1–1.5 metres high × 1.5 metres wide.

Care & Growing Tips
Position: Plant in full sun to part shade. In Melbourne, a position with morning sun and some protection from harsh afternoon heat can help maintain healthy foliage and fruit.

Soil: Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil with slightly acidic conditions. Improve the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture throughout the growing season, particularly during flowering and fruit development. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely during hot weather.

Mulching: Apply a generous layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture, keep roots cool and reduce weeds. Keep mulch clear of the main stems.

Fertilising: Apply compost or a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and fruit production, following the manufacturer's directions.

Pruning: Prune during winter while the plant is dormant. Remove dead, damaged and weak branches, along with selected older stems, to improve airflow and encourage healthy new growth. Retain productive young wood, as redcurrants fruit on growth formed during previous seasons.

Flowering & Fruiting: Small flowers develop into clusters of bright red berries, generally ripening during mid to late summer.

Harvesting: Pick entire clusters of berries once the fruit is fully coloured and ripe. Handle gently to avoid damaging the delicate currants.

Fruit Storage: Enjoy freshly picked redcurrants soon after harvesting or refrigerate promptly. Berries can also be frozen for later use.

Seasonal Care: Redcurrant is deciduous and naturally loses its leaves during winter before producing fresh growth in spring.
