Description

Serruria ‘Blushing Bride’ is one of the world's most elegant flowering shrubs, admired for its delicate white blooms and soft, feathery foliage. A highly prized South African fynbos plant, this beautiful evergreen produces exquisite flowers from winter through to spring and is renowned as one of the finest cut flowers for weddings and floral arrangements. Its refined appearance and compact habit make it a stunning feature in well-drained gardens throughout Melbourne and south-east Victoria.
The intricate flowers resemble delicate bridal bouquets, with creamy white bracts surrounding soft pink centres that gradually open into elegant blooms. Flowering over many months, they provide exceptional garden interest while also producing long-lasting stems that are highly sought after by florists. The fine-textured foliage complements the flowers beautifully, creating a soft, graceful appearance all year round.
Compact and naturally rounded, ‘Blushing Bride’ is perfect for feature planting, decorative containers and Mediterranean-style gardens where excellent drainage can be provided.
Mature size: approximately 1 metre high × 1 metre wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun position with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Good air circulation is essential to maintain healthy growth and reduce the risk of fungal disease.
Prefers free-draining, slightly acidic soil. Excellent drainage is critical, particularly in Melbourne's heavier clay soils. Plant into a raised garden bed or mound if necessary, incorporating coarse sand or gravel to improve drainage.
Water regularly during the first year to establish a healthy root system, allowing the soil to partially dry between waterings. Once established, plants become moderately drought tolerant but benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Feed sparingly in spring using a low-phosphorus fertiliser formulated for Australian native plants or Proteaceae. Seaweed solutions or organic soil conditioners can also be used to support healthy growth. Avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers and excessive feeding.
Apply a 5-8cm layer of pine bark, wood chips or leaf mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the base of the plant.
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape, encourage branching and improve future flowering. Avoid cutting back into older woody stems.
Moderately frost tolerant once established and well suited to Melbourne's temperate climate, provided drainage is excellent.
