Description

Some evenings deserve a little magic.

Lumiz Solar Lanterns bring warmth and character to your outdoor spaces without a power point in sight. Hang them from a pergola, trail them through a garden bed, or dot them along a verandah edge. When the sun goes down, they come to life on their own. No switches, no cables, no fuss.

Built to live outside.

Lumiz lanterns are made from Tyvek — a material that looks and feels a little like paper, but behaves nothing like it. Weather-resistant, colourfast, and 100% recyclable, your lanterns will hold their colour and shape through rain, wind, and the full swing of the seasons.

Solar charging, made simple.

Each lantern has a built-in solar panel and light sensor. During the day, it quietly charges in the sun. At dusk, it switches on automatically. On a generous sunny day they'll glow longest. In winter or overcast conditions, they'll still glow — just adjust naturally with the seasons.

For best results, charge in direct sun for 4 to 6 hours. Built-in thermal protection means the battery handles both summer heat and winter cold without issue.

Placement: what actually works.

They charge best where the sun can reach the panel directly. If your lanterns hang where sun touches them for most of the day, they'll perform beautifully. If they're further under cover, you may notice dimming after a few cloudy days. The easy fix: move them into full sun for a day or two. Many customers hang them at the verandah edge where afternoon sun still reaches, and never need to move them at all.

The one spot to avoid is deep all-day shade where no sun reaches the panel at any point during the day.

Keeping them at their best.

Wipe the solar panel occasionally to keep it charging efficiently. Replace the AAA NiMH rechargeable battery (1.2V, ~700mA) every 12 to 15 months. Remove the battery before storing for winter. That's genuinely all the maintenance they need.

Lumiz FAQs

How long do they glow on a full charge?

Run time depends on how much sun the panel receives during the day. In summer with 6 to 7 hours of direct sun, you'll get the longest run times. In autumn and spring with 3 to 6 hours, performance is still strong. In winter or overcast conditions with 1 to 2 hours of sun, they'll still glow but for a shorter period. The lanterns adjust naturally with the seasons.

Will these work under a verandah or pergola?

Yes, with a simple approach. Lumiz lanterns charge best where direct sunlight can reach the solar panel for most of the day. If hung at the edge of a verandah where afternoon sun still reaches, most customers never need to move them. If positioned further under cover, you may notice them dimming after several cloudy days in a row. The fix is simple: move them into full sun for a day or two and they'll be back to full brightness. Then reposition them wherever you like.

What if they hang slightly under a tree?

Partial shade from a tree will reduce charging time but won't stop them working altogether. The more direct sun the panel receives, the longer they'll glow at night. On a clear day with 6 or more hours of sun, expect the longest run times. In shadier spots or overcast conditions, they'll still glow but for a shorter period. Periodically moving them to a sunnier spot for a top-up charge keeps them performing well.

Are Lumiz lanterns waterproof?

Lumiz lanterns are made from Tyvek, a weather-resistant material that handles rain, wind, and outdoor conditions well. They are designed to live outside year-round. While they are not fully submersible, normal rainfall and outdoor weather won't damage them. The built-in thermal protection also means the battery handles both summer heat and winter cold without issue.

What is Tyvek?

Tyvek is a synthetic material made from HDPE fibres. It has the strength of plastic, the lightness of paper, and the flexibility of fabric. It's the same material used in high-performance building wrap and medical packaging because of its durability. For Lumiz lanterns, it means the shade holds its shape, resists tearing, stays colourfast, and handles the outdoors without degrading. It's also 100% recyclable.

What battery do I need?

Lumiz lanterns use a single AAA rechargeable NiMH battery at 1.2 volts and approximately 700mA. Replace it every 12 to 15 months for a consistent glow. Always use a rechargeable NiMH battery, not a standard alkaline AAA. Remove the battery before storing the lanterns over winter.

How do I keep them at their best?

Wipe the solar panel clean occasionally to keep it charging efficiently. Charge in direct sun for 4 to 6 hours for best results. Replace the battery every 12 to 15 months. Before winter storage, remove the battery to preserve it. That's genuinely all the maintenance they need.
