Description
Strawberry ‘Red Petals’ is a compact, fruiting strawberry plant that combines beautiful red flowers with sweet, juicy strawberries. Both ornamental and edible, this attractive variety is perfect for gardeners wanting to grow their own fruit while adding colour to pots, hanging baskets and garden beds.
Unlike traditional white-flowering strawberries, ‘Red Petals’ produces masses of small, vibrant red flowers that create a colourful display throughout the growing season. These flowers develop into delicious red strawberries, making the plant as productive as it is attractive.
The berries are highly aromatic, firm, glossy and juicy, with a lovely sweet flavour. Enjoy them freshly picked, add them to breakfast bowls and desserts, or use them in homemade jams and baking.
With its naturally compact, spreading growth habit, ‘Red Petals’ is particularly well suited to container gardening. Its colourful flowers and developing fruit look lovely spilling over the edges of hanging baskets, raised planters and patio pots.
Fruiting can occur from spring through to autumn, with the main harvest during the warmer months. Its combination of flowers, fruit and attractive green foliage makes it a rewarding choice for small gardens and productive outdoor spaces.
Mature size: approximately 40cm high × 40cm wide.
Care & Growing Tips
Position: Plant in full sun to part shade. A position receiving at least six hours of sunlight daily encourages healthy flowering and fruit production. In Melbourne, some protection from intense afternoon heat can benefit container-grown plants during summer.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. For pots and hanging baskets, use a quality premium potting mix with good drainage.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, particularly during flowering and fruit development. Water regularly during Melbourne's warmer months, taking care to avoid waterlogged conditions.
Mulching: Apply straw or another suitable organic mulch around the plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds and help keep developing strawberries off the soil.
Fertilising: Apply a fertiliser suitable for strawberries or fruiting plants during the growing season, following the manufacturer's directions. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers and fruit.
Flowering & Fruiting: Produces attractive red flowers followed by sweet strawberries. Flowering and fruiting can continue from spring through to autumn under suitable growing conditions.
Harvesting: Pick strawberries when they are fully red, glossy and ripe. Harvest regularly to enjoy the fruit at its best.
Pruning & Maintenance: Remove old, damaged or diseased leaves as required. Trim unwanted runners to maintain a compact plant and encourage energy towards flowering and fruiting.
Frost Protection: ‘Red Petals’ is frost-sensitive. Protect plants from heavy frosts, particularly during flowering. Move container-grown plants into a sheltered position during very cold weather.
Container Growing: An excellent choice for hanging baskets, patio pots and raised planters. Ensure containers have drainage holes and monitor moisture regularly, as potting mix can dry out quickly in warm weather.
Fruit Protection: Protect developing strawberries from birds and other garden pests where necessary. Use wildlife-safe netting or suitable barriers if required.
