Telopea speciosissima × Telopea mongaensis

Telopea ‘Braidwood Brilliant’ is a hardy Australian native shrub admired for its spectacular deep red flowers, dense green foliage and striking spring display. This beautiful Waratah makes an excellent feature plant, bringing bold colour and structure to native gardens.

Developed at the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra, ‘Braidwood Brilliant’ was selected for its hardiness and brilliant flower colour. Its parentage combines Telopea speciosissima and Telopea mongaensis, resulting in a garden-worthy hybrid suited to temperate growing conditions.

During spring, large, vibrant red Waratah flowers appear against the plant's attractive green foliage. Their distinctive shape and rich colour create a striking display, making this variety a standout feature in garden beds and native landscapes.

The flowers are also excellent for cutting, with their bold appearance making them popular in floral arrangements and native flower displays.

With its naturally dense, upright growth habit, ‘Braidwood Brilliant’ develops into a substantial shrub that provides year-round greenery and seasonal interest. It works particularly well as a feature planting, in mixed native garden beds or as part of a woodland-style landscape.

This variety is well suited to Melbourne's temperate climate, provided it is planted in acidic, free-draining soil. Good drainage is especially important during Melbourne's wetter winter months.

Mature size: approximately 3 metres high × 2 metres wide.

Care & Growing Tips
Position: Plant in full sun to part shade. A sunny position encourages compact growth and strong flowering. Light afternoon shade can be beneficial in particularly hot, exposed locations.

Soil: Requires well-drained, slightly acidic soil, ideally with a pH of approximately 5.5–6.5. Sandy soils and sandy loams are particularly suitable. Avoid heavy, waterlogged or highly alkaline soils.

Drainage: Excellent drainage is essential for healthy growth. In Melbourne gardens with heavy clay soil, consider planting in a raised garden bed with suitable free-draining soil.

Watering: Water regularly and deeply during the first year while the plant establishes. Once established, ‘Braidwood Brilliant’ has moderate drought tolerance but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods.

Mulching: Apply a 5–8cm layer of pine bark, wood chips or leaf litter to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and improve soil conditions. Keep mulch clear of the main stem.

Fertilising: Feed lightly with a low-phosphorus fertiliser formulated for Australian native plants in spring and autumn, following the manufacturer's directions. Avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers and excessive feeding, as Waratahs are sensitive to elevated phosphorus levels.

Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering to maintain a dense, compact shape and encourage branching. Removing spent flower stems can also help promote strong new growth for future flowering.

Flowering: Produces striking deep red flowers during spring. Adequate sunlight, good drainage and appropriate pruning help support healthy flowering.

Frost Tolerance: Moderately frost tolerant once established. Young plants may benefit from protection during severe frosts, particularly in exposed Melbourne gardens.

Air Circulation: Allow adequate space around the plant to encourage airflow. Good drainage and avoiding excessive watering help reduce the risk of fungal problems.

Cut Flowers: Flowers can be harvested for floral arrangements. Cutting flowering stems also provides an opportunity to lightly shape the plant after flowering.
