Description

Enchanted® Red is a breathtaking Australian Waratah, producing spectacular flower heads in brilliant shades of crimson, strawberry red and cherry. As each bloom matures, delicate creamy-white highlights emerge across the flower, creating a unique display that evolves throughout the flowering season. This striking native makes an outstanding feature plant for Melbourne and south-east Victorian gardens, combining exceptional ornamental appeal with the iconic beauty of Australia's floral emblem.
Flowering throughout spring, the large velvety blooms are held proudly above glossy evergreen foliage, creating a dramatic display that attracts birds and makes an exceptional cut flower. As the flowers continue to develop, the soft white markings create an ever-changing contrast against the rich red petals, ensuring the plant remains a standout feature for many weeks.
With its upright habit and bold flowers, Enchanted® Red is perfect as a specimen shrub, feature planting or focal point in native and contemporary landscapes. It pairs beautifully with Proteas, Banksias and Leucadendrons to create a spectacular waterwise garden.
Mature size: approximately 3 metres high × 1.5 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun to part shade position. In Melbourne, full sun encourages the best flowering, while light afternoon shade can be beneficial in hotter inland gardens. Good air circulation is essential for healthy growth.
Prefers free-draining, slightly acidic soil. Excellent drainage is critical, particularly in Melbourne's heavier clay soils. Improve drainage by planting into a raised garden bed or mound if necessary.
Water regularly during establishment to develop a strong root system. Once established, Enchanted® Red has relatively low water requirements but will benefit from deep watering during prolonged dry periods, particularly while flower buds are developing.
Feed lightly in spring and autumn using a low-phosphorus fertiliser formulated for Australian native plants. Avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers and excessive feeding.
Apply a layer of pine bark, wood chips or leaf mulch to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and regulate soil temperature, ensuring mulch is kept clear of the stem.
Prune immediately after flowering by removing spent flower stems to encourage dense growth, improved branching and abundant flowering the following season.
Moderately frost tolerant once established and well suited to Melbourne's temperate climate, provided drainage is excellent.
