Description

Viburnum tinus, commonly known as Laurustinus, is a hardy evergreen shrub widely used for hedging, screening and formal garden structure. Known for its dense glossy foliage and reliable growth, it is a practical choice for creating privacy, defining boundaries or adding year-round greenery to the garden. Its ability to handle regular clipping also makes it popular for topiary and neatly shaped hedges.
During winter and early spring, clusters of soft pink buds open into masses of small white flowers with a light fragrance, bringing colour and interest at a time when many gardens are quieter. These flowers are followed by blue-black berries that can attract birds and add further seasonal appeal. The rich green leathery foliage remains dense throughout the year, making Viburnum tinus one of the more dependable evergreen screening plants for Australian gardens.
This fast-growing shrub adapts well to a wide range of garden styles and conditions. It performs equally well as a formal hedge, informal screen or standalone feature shrub. In smaller gardens, it can also be trained into a compact specimen tree. Viburnum tinus is well suited to suburban gardens where toughness, privacy and low maintenance are priorities once established.
Mature size: approximately 3 metres high × 2.5 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Viburnum tinus in full sun to part shade. It performs best with good airflow and regular moisture during establishment.
Prefers moist, well-drained soil but adapts well to a range of soil types including clay and sandy soils once established.
Water regularly while young and during extended dry periods. Mature plants are relatively hardy and low maintenance.
Feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
Light pruning after flowering will help maintain a dense shape and encourage fresh growth, especially when grown as a hedge or topiary plant.
Apply mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Frost tolerant and adaptable to a range of Australian growing conditions once established. Monitor for pests such as thrips, particularly on new growth.
