Wisteria Japanese White, also known as Wisteria floribunda ‘Alba’, is a classic, large-growing climber prized for its elegant cascades of pure white, fragrant flowers. This is the famous white wisteria seen draped over bridges and pergolas in traditional gardens, including the iconic Japanese Bridge in Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny.
Flowering in late spring to early summer, Japanese White Wisteria produces exceptionally long clusters of pea-like blooms, often reaching up to 60cm in length. Flowers open progressively along each raceme, creating a dramatic, layered display. Fresh green foliage follows the flowers, forming dense shade through summer before turning soft yellow in autumn. Velvety green seed pods develop after flowering and may persist into winter.
This is a vigorous, long-lived deciduous climber best suited to strong, permanent structures. It twines clockwise and is ideal for covering pergolas, arbors, fences, trellises, or sunny house walls. With correct pruning and positioning, it can also be trained as a striking feature plant or grown as a half-standard in a large container.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun encourages the best flowering. Once established, plants are reasonably drought tolerant. Regular pruning is essential to manage size and promote flowering, with summer and winter pruning recommended. Choose the planting position carefully, as wisterias dislike being transplanted once established.
Caution: all parts of this plant are toxic if ingested and may cause discomfort. Toxic to pets and livestock
