Wisteria sinensis ‘Amethyst Purple’ is a vigorous, deciduous climber producing long, cascading clusters of intensely fragrant violet-purple flowers in spring. Its spectacular blooms appear before the new foliage emerges, creating an impressive display of colour and fragrance.

A fast-growing and long-lived climber, Chinese Wisteria is particularly well suited to covering large pergolas, arches and arbours. As the flowers finish, fresh green foliage develops into a leafy canopy, providing welcome shade throughout summer. In winter, the leaves fall, allowing sunlight through to the space below.

With its strong climbing habit and beautiful hanging flowers, ‘Amethyst Purple’ makes an excellent feature in larger gardens. It can also be trained along sturdy wires against walls, where regular pruning will help maintain its shape and encourage flowering.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. A sunny position encourages the best flowering. Water regularly while establishing and during extended periods of hot, dry weather.

Provide a very strong, permanent support structure, as Chinese Wisteria develops thick, woody stems that can become extremely heavy and powerful with age. Avoid allowing stems to wrap around gutters, downpipes or other structures that could be damaged by their growth.

Prune after flowering to control vigorous growth and maintain the desired shape. A second prune in winter, while the plant is dormant, helps manage size and encourage flowering spurs for the following spring.

Avoid excessive high-nitrogen fertiliser, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
