Blackcurrant.
Botanical Name: Ribes nigrum.
The Black currant is easily grown in the home garden. The fruit is produced on small shrubs on the branches from the previous year. Black Currants are high in antioxidants and Vitamins, in particular Vitamin C. The fruits taste is sharp but very sweet which makes them ideal for eating fresh or in juices, jellies, jams, liqueurs and desserts.
The Black Currant fruit is approximately 1cm in diameter and is glossy dark purple to black in colour. Black Currants will fruit through spring and into summer. Pick entire clusters and consume fresh, or the fresh currants can be
frozen.
This deciduous shrub prefers a sunny to partly shaded position in acidic, moist, well-drained soil.
Mulch well to conserve soil moisture and prune to remove smaller, weaker branches and to open up the plant.
Mature Size: H1-1.5 x W1.5m.
