Bay Tree ‘Miles Choice’ (Laurus nobilis ‘Miles Choice’) is a robust, evergreen tree prized for its dense foliage, resilience and versatility in both ornamental and edible gardens. This improved bay variety is known for its excellent drought and salt tolerance, making it particularly well suited to Australian conditions, including coastal and exposed sites.
Featuring glossy, dark green, aromatic leaves that are smaller and more abundant than traditional bay trees, Miles Choice forms a lush, full canopy that responds exceptionally well to pruning. In spring, clusters of soft yellow flowers appear, adding subtle seasonal interest against the evergreen foliage.
Highly adaptable, Miles Choice can be grown as a feature tree, clipped hedge, screen or sculpted into topiary forms. It also performs very well in large containers, making it ideal for courtyards, patios and balconies. Beyond its ornamental value, the leaves can be harvested and dried for culinary use, adding depth and flavour to a wide range of dishes.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil. While it prefers fertile soil, Miles Choice tolerates poorer soils once established. Water regularly while young, then reduce, as the plant is drought tolerant when mature, though occasional deep watering will improve growth. Light pruning can be done throughout the year, with harder pruning best carried out in spring. Apply a slow-release fertiliser at the start of spring and mulch annually to retain moisture and support soil health. Monitor for aphids and scale and treat if required.
