Hydrangea paniculata ‘Grandiflora’, commonly known as Pee Gee Hydrangea, is a classic, large-flowering deciduous shrub valued for its dramatic blooms, strong structure and long seasonal interest. This reliable paniculata hydrangea produces impressive, cone-shaped flower panicles that can reach up to 30cm long, creating a bold and elegant display from summer through to autumn.
The flowers open in creamy white before gradually softening to blush pink as they mature, adding depth and movement to the garden over time. Blooms are held high on sturdy, upright stems above dense, dark green foliage, making them highly visible and effective as both garden features and cut flowers. In autumn, the foliage turns warm shades of yellow before dropping for winter dormancy.
Highly adaptable, Pee Gee hydrangea tolerates sunnier positions better than many other hydrangeas and delivers consistent flowering regardless of soil pH.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil. In hotter climates, protect from harsh afternoon sun to reduce leaf scorch. Keep soil evenly moist during warmer months and water sparingly in winter. Prune hard in winter, cutting stems back to 30–45cm from ground level, as flowers form on new wood. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in late spring and apply mulch annually to retain moisture and improve soil health. Monitor for powdery mildew, aphids and mites and treat if required.
Caution: harmful to pets if ingested and may cause skin irritation in humans.
