Description
Telopea speciosissima × Telopea oreades.
Telopea ‘Shady Lady Red’ is a striking Australian native shrub admired for its large, vibrant red flowers, glossy green foliage and strong, upright growth habit. This hybrid Waratah makes an impressive feature plant, bringing bold colour and year-round structure to native and contemporary gardens.
A cross between Telopea speciosissima and Telopea oreades, ‘Shady Lady Red’ combines the spectacular flowers of the Waratah with improved vigour and adaptability, making it a popular choice for home gardens and cut flower production.
From late winter through spring, large, brilliant red flower heads appear above the lush evergreen foliage, creating a dramatic seasonal display. Their distinctive shape and rich colour make them a standout feature in garden beds and native landscapes.
The flowers are also excellent for cutting, making ‘Shady Lady Red’ a popular choice for floral arrangements, including native bouquets and wedding flowers.
With its naturally upright growth habit and dense green foliage, this variety provides attractive garden structure throughout the year. It works beautifully as a feature shrub, in mixed native plantings or as part of a woodland-style garden.
‘Shady Lady Red’ is well suited to Melbourne's temperate climate, provided it is grown in slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Its moderate frost tolerance and ability to withstand dry periods once established make it a useful choice for suitable local garden conditions.
Mature size: approximately 3 metres high × 1.5 metres wide.
Care & Growing Tips
Position: Plant in full sun to part shade. A sunny position encourages strong flowering and compact growth. Light afternoon shade can be beneficial in very hot, exposed locations.
Soil: Requires well-drained, slightly acidic soil, ideally with a pH of approximately 5.5–6.5. Sandy soils and sandy loams are particularly suitable. Avoid heavy, waterlogged or highly alkaline soils.
Drainage: Excellent drainage is essential. In Melbourne gardens with heavy clay soil, consider planting in a raised garden bed with suitable free-draining soil.
Watering: Water regularly and deeply during the first year while the plant establishes, keeping the soil evenly moist without becoming waterlogged. Once established, ‘Shady Lady Red’ is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods.
Mulching: Apply a 5–8cm layer of pine bark, wood chips or leaf litter to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and improve soil conditions. Keep mulch clear of the main stem.
Fertilising: Feed lightly with a low-phosphorus fertiliser formulated for Australian native plants in spring and autumn, following the manufacturer's directions. Avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers and excessive feeding, as Waratahs are sensitive to elevated phosphorus levels.
Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering to maintain shape, encourage branching and promote strong flowering stems for the following season. Remove spent flowers and damaged growth as required.
Flowering: Produces large, vibrant red flower heads from late winter through spring. Adequate sunlight, good drainage and appropriate pruning help support healthy flowering.
Frost Tolerance: Moderately frost tolerant once established. Young plants may benefit from protection during severe frosts, particularly in exposed Melbourne gardens.
Air Circulation: Allow adequate space around the plant to encourage good airflow. Avoid overwatering and poorly drained conditions to help minimise fungal problems.
Cut Flowers: The large, long-stemmed blooms are suitable for floral arrangements. Harvesting flowers also provides an opportunity to lightly shape the plant after flowering.
