Acer palmatum Matsugae.
In spring it opens with cream and rose markings along its irregular shaped medium green leaves. In summer the rose color fades away and the cream turns pure white leaving beautifully contrasting variegation all summer long. Red petioles also add to the overall appearance of 'Matsugae'. This is a very old cultivar with a name that means 'the pine branch' which is hard to understand for a variegated cultivar. This plant is similar to 'Kagiri nishiki' but is faster growing and has better variegation.
Maple Tree Care
Japanese Maples are beautiful, relatively low-fuss trees that reward you with exceptional colour in spring and autumn. They s slightly acidic, well-drained soil and a position with protection from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds.
Water regularly while young, allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering, then reduce frequency once established. A slow-release fertiliser in early spring can assist younger trees in establishing, though mature maples rarely require heavy feeding. Pruning is minimal — a light summer tidy-up of dead, damaged or crowded branches will maintain shape and health without disrupting its natural form.
